Aggies Fall to Mercer in CIT Championship, 70-67

LOGAN— The USU men’s basketball team ended its season Wednesday, and the Aggies final game was a microcosm of their season. Utah State struggled early, rallied in the second half, but ultimately fell short, losing to Mercer, 70-67, in the championship game of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.   “It’s been a really good experience for us. I’ve told the guys that for the last two games, that no matter what happens, it’s been a positive thing,” USU head coach Stew Morrill said. “It was a good way to end...

Aggies Blast Idaho, Advance to CIT Quarterfinals

LOGAN— The USU men’s basketball team may not have been the top WAC team in 2012. Saturday night though, they were clearly the best WAC team in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament as they blasted the Idaho Vandals, 76-56.   “I thought that we came out excited to play. We had some energy and at this time of the year that is critical,” USU head coach Stew Morrill said. “Obviously, it is easier when you are the home team, but it is not always a guarantee. I was just really pleased...

LOGAN— Sophomore guard Preston Medlin rebounded from a rough game at the WAC tournament to score 24 points and lead Utah State to its first postseason win in more than a decade Wednesday as the Aggies defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 75-69.   “It’s great, coming off a rough game offensively, to come out and play good offensively,” Medlin said. “I was happy with what I did tonight.”   Less than a week removed from a first round exit at their conference tournament, the Aggies’ starters stepped up their play...

Bulldogs Oust Aggie Men From Tourney, 72-70

LAS VEGAS— It’s hard to beat the same team three times in one season, and the USU men’s basketball team found that out firsthand Thursday night as the Aggies fell to Louisiana Tech in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference tournament, 72-70.   Utah State had a chance to tie or win after the Bulldog’s Trevor Gaskins missed a free throw with 4.1 seconds remaining, but the Aggies did not get a shot off before time expired. With no timeouts remaining, Kyisean Reed rebounded the miss and...

COLUMN: Are The Aggies Finally Hitting Their Stride?

LOGAN— Less than two weeks ago, the USU men’s basketball team seemed to be on its last leg. Three straight conference wins and a road sweep later, the Aggies have breathed some life into their season once again.   This has been Utah State’s (17-14, 8-6) most up and down season in more than a decade. Things started promising with a season-opening win against rival BYU, but expectations were quickly tempered as the Aggies followed that up with a loss to Weber State.   Next the Aggies lost senior...

Aggies Steal One From Hawaii, 61-60

HONOLULU— When the USU men’s basketball team travels to Hawaii, it’s nothing if not exciting.   Following a thrilling double-overtime victory on the island last season, the Aggies defeated the Rainbow Warriors 61-60 Saturday night after senior Morgan Grim made a runner with seven seconds remaining.   “We just kept playing, that’s what you’ve got to do,” Grim said in a postgame radio interview. “That’s kind of been the theme all year. We’ve had a lot of ups and downs, but you’ve just got to keep playing.”   With...

Big Second Half Propels USU to Senior Night Win

LOGAN—It was an emotional night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum Friday night as the Utah State men’s basketball team honored their three senior players in their final regular season home game with an impressive come-from-behind 67-50 win over Idaho.   Led by sophomore guard Preston Medlin, who had a career-high 32 points, the Aggies (15-14, 6-6) used an explosive second half  to earn the victory over their Western Athletic Conference foe.  After trailing the Vandals by 15 points with just over four minutes left in the first...

Gauchos Hand USU Fourth Home Loss, 72-64

LOGAN— The Utah State men’s basketball team played in its first ever non-televised ESPN BracketBuster game. After falling to former Big West foe UC Santa Barbara, 72-64, the Aggies are probably glad for the lack of national exposure.   Sophomore guard Preston Medlin finished with 14 points, but poor shooting proved costly for USU.   “We knew we drew a good team,” USU head coach Stew Morrill said. “We drew a really good Big West team. They’re a veteran team and they showed it.”   Utah State controlled the...

Aggie Men Slog Past Montana Tech, 70-58

LOGAN— Coming off another tough loss courtesy of a late game collapse, the USU men’s basketball team seemed to have an easy bounce-back game as the Aggies hosted Montana Tech in a Valentine’s Day matchup.   The Orediggers had no love for the Aggies, however, as they came out firing and nearly handed Utah State (14-13, 5-6) its worst loss of the season, before falling to the Aggies, 70-58. Following the lackadaisical effort, USU head coach Stew Morrill was none to pleased.   “Yesterday after practice I had some...
