Bobcats Bounce Westlake, 4-2, in First Round of State Playoffs

SMITHFIELD— Winning ugly is still winning, and that’s what the Sky View baseball team did Tuesday afternoon as the Bobcats defeated Westlake, 4-2, in the first round of the 4A State baseball tournament.   “We needed everything, we need all aspects of our game today,” SV head coach Brady Pond said. “We needed good defense, good pitching, good hitting. I thought we put together a pretty solid game today.”   Despite having faced and defeated the Thunder earlier in the season, the Bobcats were facing Westlake’s ace pitcher for...

Bobcats Lock up No. 2 Seed in Region

SMITHFIELD— After going through the motions in a loss to Roy Wednesday, the Sky View baseball team focused and did what it had to do Friday, to lock up the No. 2 spot in Region 5 and guarantee itself a home game in the first round of the state playoffs.   The Bobcats (16-8, 10-5) surgically disposed of the Box Elder Bees, 5-0, to come away with the Senior Day win and leave nothing up to chance. Going into the game, Sky View was tied with valley-rival Logan,...

Sky View Stuns Bonneville 5-2 on Senior Day

SMITHFIELD— Having no shot at making the state playoffs didn’t stop the Sky View softball team from turning in one of its best games of the season and defeating region power Bonneville, 5-2, on Senior Day.   The Lakers quickly scored with an RBI in the first inning after Alex Weaver stole second and third base, and was brought home by Andy Hancock’s ball to center field. Weaver had another RBI on a double made by McKinlee Westmoreland, leaving the Bobcats trailing 2-0 by the third inning.   Defense...

Bobcats Suffer Bad Home Loss to Roy, 6-5

SMITHFIELD— One day removed from a late-inning rally at Roy, the Bobcats’ comeback bid fell short as the lost to the Royals at home for the second time this season, 6-5. The loss dropped Sky View into a tie for second place in the region standing with valley-rival Logan.   “We just take them lightly, we think we’re going to win,” senior Jason Oliverson said. “We come out thinking we can just step on the field and win without really trying – that just takes us out of...

SV Soccer Hangs Tough, But Falls to Box Elder, 2-1

SMITHFIELD— The Sky View and the Box Elder boy’s soccer teams clashed Tuesday afternoon. Both teams had ample opportunities to score goals, but it was the Bees that came out on top, 2-1.   The Bobcats started the game with the focus of trying to possess the ball, to be more patient with it, and score when chances presented themselves. The hope was that the different game plan would keep the forwards more rested so that they could make more effective runs toward the net.   “Our game plan...

Bobcats Bounce Back, Crush Bonneville, 11-1

SMITHFIELD— Coming off two disappointing loses – including a home loss to region bottom dweller Roy – the Sky View baseball team responded in a big way Tuesday, defeating Bonneville, 11-1, in five innings.   In the previous losses, the Bobcats had been struggling at the plate as they only managed a combined two runs in those games. The Cats took in some extra batting practice over the weekend, and the extra work clearly paid off.   “The kids took it upon themselves. Our senior leadership decided that they...

      MC Soccer Blasts Bobcats, 5-0

SMITHFIELD— In a one-sided affair, the Mountain Crest boys soccer team ran past Sky View Friday, 5-0, as five different Mustangs scored in the win.   “It’s gratifying to get a game with more than one goal again,” MC head coach Mike Gurney said. “We’ve been working on that this week. We really want to get the ball to where the forwards can be going forward and have more looks.”   Mountain Crest established its dominance early.   Junior Sean Johnson tested Sky View’s defense with a shot...

      Grizzly Soccer Blanks Bobcats, 3-0

SMITHFIELD— In a dominating performance, the Logan High soccer team topped valley rival Sky View, 3-0, under the lights Friday.   “We didn’t know what to expect,” Logan head coach Tod Martin said. “I was glad our team came out as strong as they did. They put together a great soccer game.”   The Grizzlies struck early.   In the fourth minute, senior Ace Phillips executed a quick give-n-go inside the 18-yard box, dumping a pass in and cutting to the middle for a wide-open look that he tucked...

      Bees Blank Bobcats, 8-0

BRIGHAM CITY— Box Elder pitcher Abbey Martin allowed just two hits in her shutout effort over the Sky View softball team Friday afternoon.   The Bees outhit the Bobcats 15-2 en route to an 8-0 win in Region 5 action.   “They are good defensively,” Sky View head coach Shane Jones said. “They made a couple errors, but the pitcher hits her spots. We just didn’t hit as well. She’s good.   “Our one through four girls didn’t get on base at all today. It doesn’t do us any...

Bobcats Host Mustangs in Track & Field

SMITHFIELD— Thursday afternoon gave northern Utah a little bit of everything weather-wise, but the Sky View and Mountain Crest track & Field teams paid little notice as they battled each other on the Bobcats home turf.   “I don’t really care about winning meets at this point. I care about seeing kids improve on their marks and some kids did today. That’s what I’m interested in, and we’ve seen some good things,” Sky View boys coach Jim Walker said. “Track is tough. We don’t come out and tiptoe through...
